Born 2nd December 1948 in Bialystok, Poland, where her family moved from Wilno after the World War II. Swedish citizen since 26 August, 1988. MA in Social and Industrial Psychology, Warsaw University, 1970; Ph.D.in Economic Sciences, Warsaw School of Economics, 1976. Visiting Research Fellow at Sloan School of Management, MIT, USA; London School of Economics and Political Science; Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin; Scholar-in-Residence at Rockefeller Foundation, Bellagio, Italy.
Fellow at Center for Cultural Sociology, Yale University; Visiting Professor at Management Centre, University of Leicester, 2004-2009.
Member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Royal Engineering Academy, and the Royal Society of Art and Sciences in Göteborg.
Lily and Sven Thuréus Technical-Economic Award for internationally renowned research in organization theory, 2000. Recipient of Wihuri International Prize 2003. "The Foundation shall accomplish its aims by distributing prizes in recognition of creative work that has specially furthered and developed the cultural and economic progress of mankind."
In 2003, she has been elected to a Honorary Fellow of the European Institute of Advanced Studies, Brussels. Stockholm School of Economics bestowed on her the title of Oeconomiae doctor honoris causa in September 2005, and Copenhagen Business School made her Doctor Mercaturae Honoris Causa in March 2006 (see http://frontpage.cbs.dk/insights/720011_czarniawska.shtml) and Helsinki School of Economics made her a Honorary Doctor of Science (Economics) in May 2006.
